Bounces, references, clear questions: how to show up ready for a consultation on your mix or production and get the most out of it.
A consultation is short and worth a lot, if you show up prepared. Most of the value is decided before anyone hits play. Here's how to make every minute count.
Export the track as a WAV, without a limiter on the master bus "to make it loud": we want to hear the mix as it really is. If your doubt is about a specific section, prepare the stems for that part too, or keep the project open and ready to share.
"How does it sound?" is too broad. Better: "Does the vocal get lost in the chorus?", "Is the bass too much?", "Does the drop hit hard enough?". Two or three precise questions let us get straight to the point.
A track that sounds the way you want yours to says more than ten adjectives. Bring two or three: they show us right away the color you're after and help us steer our advice in the right direction.
Lots of ideas will come up. Write them down, or record the video call, so you can get back to the project with a clear to-do list.
